Below is a picture of my local ramp last Sunday. It was mayhem. The carpark was full. The overflow carpark was full. Every bit of grass, and all the surrounding streets literally for kilometres around, were full of cars and boat trailers.

Big Melbourne is all very well, but an increasing number of its residents are buying boats, and not unreasonably want to launch them when it is a nice day, especially on the weekend.

Here’s a suggestion then: let’s schedule a few WBA Bay sailing days not on a weekend! And definitely not in snapper season! Outside the weekends the ramps are usually much quieter, and launching, sailing and retrieving are much more relaxed, civilised activities. I suspect that for some of us, as we are no longer in the regular workforce, a week day is at least as convenient as a Sunday, and the workers amongst us could possibly arrange a day off given sufficient advance notice.

For 2022, I suggest we organize a few midweek Bay sailing days. From now to February is busy for everyone, and it is snapper season, so forget it. But from February onwards, we could think of arranging a few midweek outings. Tentatively, I suggest we could kick off with a sailing day from the Warmies in Williamstown, either up the river if it is blowy, or just a potter round Hobsons Bay, always interesting to sail through the moorings, and stop over at the Ferguson Street pier for fish and chips, or over to St Kilda if we feel adventurous and the weather cooperates. What about some predictable, relatively memorable date, like the first Wednesday of the month? The first Wednesday in February 2022 is Chinese New Year, Year of the Tiger, which seems particularly auspicious.

Subsequent midweek sailing days could give members an opportunity to showcase their own local favourite day sails, and give the rest of us an opportunity to explore and expand our horizons.

Any thoughts, suggestions and feedback very welcome. Keep an eye on Shavings and the WBA website calendar for further details, and we can discuss over drinks at the Christmas party.
