Built by Gary Hardy, launched February 2024

LOA: 11'11" Weight: 420lb

Comfortable, capable, and clever, with water ballast, off-centreboard, masses of storage and buoyancy, the 11’11” long SCAMP is a fantastic coastal micro cruiser.

I saw my first SCAMP down at the Wooden Boat Festival in 2023 and knew I had to build one. I arranged for the CNC kit to be cut, and while surrounded by a pile of bits of oddly shaped plywood the call for entries for the 2024 Paynesville Classic Boat Rally came out. I entered, which gave me just on 10 months for the build. I finished with a couple of days to spare. The photo below is ANJEVI on her second ever sail on that blowy Sunday in 2024.

I believe ANJEVI was the first SCAMP built in Victoria. The fleet is growing fast. The SCAMP has lots of advantages for an older sailor - it is light and compact, so it is easy to move, launch and retrieve. The balanced lug rig and unstayed mast are simple to rig, but give very respectable performance. The water ballast and buoyancy make the boat difficult to capsize and quick to recover, which makes for relaxing sailing. I believe a key measure of a boat is how often you use it - I have managed to be on the water on average one day in seven since I launched ANJEVI. For me, it is a really good fit for the sorts of sailing I like to do: pottering, day sails, occasional overnighters and extended adventures.
